A mathematical estimator for the design of large plants
This case protagonist is one of the most important world players in the construction of large chemical and petrochemical plants. Together we have developed an estimator, based on mathematical models, able to estimate the typologies and the quantities of materials necessary for a new project.
- Description and benefits
Prior to our work, the company realized the estimates relying exclusively on the experience of its technicians, with a great use of time and resources. Supported by the availability of historical data and the in-depth knowledge of the company's experts, we developed an algorithm that outputs a preliminary estimate of the materials to be provided to the design engineers.
Our algorithm enables the company to calculate the total quantities of materials required for the project.
Moreover, it can provide detailed indications of the different parts and types of material that compose the overall plant.
Quick estimates
Decrease in processing time (from days and weeks to hours)
More accurate planning
Quantities and types of materials needed for the project can be known in advance
A more accurate estimate
There is less chance that an estimate will deviate too much from the actual cost
Deepening case study
Augmented human: the encounter between mathematical models and human experience
What we have realized for this customer is a set of models that estimates the various types of materials (pipes, valves, flanges, etc.). Before constructing a final comprehensive output, our software provides the possibility of verifying the quantities step by step and making any corrections, based on the operators own experience, to obtain an increasingly precise result. The user can also provide guidance to the model on expected input-output relationships to lead the estimation process in the most unexplored contexts. These results are then reworked by our models to arrive at the final overall estimate.
